Check all doors and windows to ensure they properly locked.
Ensure all garage doors are locked shut; do not trust a garage door to do this for you.

Keep all business equipment in the building.
Use a safe to store any moneys or other valuables, bolted down or heavy enough so it cannot be carried away.
Use dead bolt locks on all exterior doors. Two locks are recommended with a 1 1/2-2 foot distance between the locks.

If possible have a security glass installed in all ground level windows.
Do not plant bushes or shrubs underneath or in front of exterior windows.
Utilize outdoor lighting to illuminate the business' exterior.
Keep all tools in a locked cage or storage box within the building.

Keep the interior and exterior of the building well lit at night.
Have a video camera system installed.
At closing time, lock the doors. If there are any strangers in the parking lot when attempting to leave, wait to see if they will leave. If the person(s) in the lot are acting suspicious, contact the police immediately to check out the situation. Do not leave until you feel safe.
