The city of Crawford, population 1,150, has a mayor-council form of government. City council meetings are held the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at City Hall. Meetings begin at 7:30 in the evening. The public is welcome to attend these meetings.

Topography: Crawford is 3,675 feet above sea level. The terrain is rolling to hilly with bluffs. Climate: The climate is semiarid, and the average annual precipitation is 18.2 inches. Temperature ranges from a mean of 23 in January to a mean of 74 in July. Chief agriculture products produced in the Crawford area are beef, wheat and alfalfa. Law Enforcement: The Crawford police force employs three full-time police officers. The Dawes County Sheriff Department also serves the area with eleven in the department including support staff. The Nebraska State Patrol stations one officer in the Crawford area and an additional six officers county-wide. In case of an emergency, dial 911. Fire & Rescue: Fire protection is provided in the community by a 40 member volunteer fire department. The department also provides protection for areas outside the community limits by operating the Rural Fire District's equipment. The rescue squad has two units with 18 certified EMTs, 12 AED certified and 10 Advanced Airway certified technicians. Major Employers in the area include Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railroad, Crow Butte Resources, Crawford Schools, and Ponderosa Villa. Medical Facilities include Legend Buttes Health Clinic, Ponderosa Villa Nursing Home, McWilliam-Moody Dental Clinic, and Warren Pharmacy. Senior care is provided by the Crawford Senior Center and Senior Housing. The Crawford Clipper newspaper offers regional news on a weekly basis.
